The Story of

"Following the Horse's Head":

 

Background:

 

During the Spring and Autumn Period(春秋時代),

 

the State of Jin(晉國), allied with twelve other states,

 

attacked the State of Qin(秦國) to avenge past grievances.

 

Xun Yan(荀偃), a general of Jin, served as the commander-in-chief (central army commander),

 

anticipating that Qin would panic.

Xun Yan issued the following order:

To ensure a swift victory,

Xun Yan commanded the entire army:

"set up the chariots at cockcrow (drive at cockcrow),

 

fill in the wells, dismantle the stoves,

 

and let the entire army's advance and retreat depend entirely on where my horse's head points!"

馬首是瞻的故事內容

 

戰爭背景：春秋時期，晉國聯合十二個諸侯國攻打秦國以報前仇。晉國將領荀偃擔任總指揮（中軍將），他估計秦國會驚慌。

 

荀偃下令：為求迅速作戰，荀偃向全軍下達命令：「雞叫時套車出發（雞鳴而駕），填平水井，拆掉爐灶（塞井夷灶，表示破釜沉舟），全軍的進退，都看我的馬頭指向哪裡（唯餘馬首是瞻）！」
