他畢生寫下三百首好歌，在三十餘年的音樂生涯當中，一共累積了三千三百萬張專輯銷售量，巡演腳印到達世界各地。
長年對於音樂的貢獻，入選「創作名人堂」終身會員，三度獲得全美音樂獎肯定，也曾拿下葛萊美獎與艾美獎，1977 年獲頒「美國觀眾票選獎」證明他的超人氣。
John Denver 本名 Henry John Deutschendorf Jr.，是德裔美國人。
身為空軍軍官的父親因任務需要必須不斷搬家，讓小小年紀的 John Denver 交不到朋友，總是沒有歸屬感。
11 歲時在祖母鼓勵下開始學吉他，上了大學就已彈得一手好琴，足以在當地的俱樂部演出。
由於原來的姓氏太長，不適合寫在俱樂部的看板上，便以自己鍾愛的科羅拉多州首府為靈感，改成現在大家熟知的 John Denver。
1969 年在 RCA 唱片公司發行首張專輯，那時他為民謠天團 Peter, Paul and Mary 譜寫的〈Leaving on a Jet Plane〉已拿下冠軍，但RCA並沒有為 John Denver 安排宣傳，因此他自力救濟，一個人到酒店與校園發放海報、尋求演唱機會。
幾個月後，他打拚出的亮眼成績讓 RCA 不得不延長唱片合約，也才有了後來一連串的精彩作品誕生。
John Denver的生涯高峰始於 1971 年專輯《Poems, Prayers, and Promises》，發行後進佔全美亞軍，並在新的經紀人操盤下聲勢扶搖直上。
整個七零年代產出四張流行 Top 10 專輯，擁有自己的電視節目，並是著名布偶秀《大青蛙劇場》的特別嘉賓，奠定不朽地位。
成名之後的 John Denver，將自己的影響力用於為弱勢發聲，在太空、自然、幼教等各種領域都能見到他積極關懷社會的蹤影。
遺憾的是，1997 年 10 月的一場空難意外，奪去了 John Denver 的生命，去世時僅僅53歲。
