 After a storm

 "No matter how bad it is, the situation will come to an end." 

"Pǐ" and "Tai" are two of the sixty-four hexagrams in the "Book of Changes".

<Gua Pǐ>(否卦), Kun(坤) is lower than Qian is upper. 

With Kun at the bottom, yin energy sinks; with Qian

above, yang(陽) energy rises.

 

 Therefore, the two qi of yin and yang do not interact with each other, which means that heaven and earth do not interact with ach other, and all things are blocked, which is a bad hexagram.

 

<Tai Gua>, On the lower Qian, the Yang Qi rises; on the upper Kun, the Yin Qi sinks.

 Therefore, the two qi of

 yin and yang intersect,

 with the image of heaven

 and earth intersecting

 and the two qi

 connecting, which

 belongs to the

auspicious hexagram.

 "there will be peace in the end" means that things will turn to the extreme, bad luck has reached the extreme, and good luck is about to come.

「否極泰來」原作「否終則泰」。〈否〉和〈泰〉是《易經》六十四卦中的兩卦。

 

〈否卦〉，坤下乾上。在下的坤，陰氣下沉；在上的乾，陽氣上升。於是陰陽二氣不交，具天地不交，萬物不通之象，屬凶卦。

〈泰卦〉，乾下坤上。在下的乾，陽氣上升；在上的坤，陰氣下沉。於是陰陽二氣相交，具天地交而二氣通之象，屬吉卦。「否終則泰」就是表示物極必反，惡運到了極點，好運即將降臨。

在春秋時代，越國被吳國所敗，越王句踐入吳稱臣，凶多吉少，臨行前與眾臣在江邊餞別，語多感慨。

大夫文種與范蠡便勸諫越王句踐，古代聖賢皆曾遭遇過許多困厄，而得以成就其聖德，故應當學習當年周文王被商紂王囚於羑（ㄧㄡˇ）里七年，卻能坦然面對的精神以自勵。

周文王雖然被紂王像個奴隸般地囚禁起來，但他並不為外在環境的榮辱感到憂愁，潛心研究《易經》中的天人之理，推演伏羲氏的八卦為六十四卦，並為之作卦辭和爻辭。

後來他人生中的困厄時期終於結束，他也得歸故里。由此可知，人生的禍福都是天道循環，只要能夠積極面對，不懷憂喪志，一旦困厄結束了，順遂的日子必然到來。

越王句踐接受了臣子們的勸諫，在吳國忍辱負重地事奉吳王夫差，終於得以歸國，更臥薪嘗膽，十年生聚，十年教訓，不斷地壯大國勢，終於滅吳，報仇雪恥。

後來「否極泰來」這句成語，就從這裡的原文「否終則泰」演變而出，比喻情況由壞逐漸好轉。
