【The Thankful Pilgrims and the First Thanksgiving】

 

A long time ago, in the early 1600s,

a group of people called the Pilgrims sailed across the ocean on a ship called the Mayflower.

They left their homes in England because they wanted to worship God in their own way and live in a place where they could be free.

 

After a long and difficult journey, they arrived in a new land called America.

When the Pilgrims first arrived, it was winter.

The weather was cold, and the land was covered in snow.

 

They didn’t have enough food, and many of them became sick.

It was a very hard time, and some of the Pilgrims didn’t survive.

But even in those difficult circumstances, they tried to remember the Bible’s teaching: “Give thanks in all circumstances.”

 

The Pilgrims worked hard to build homes and plant crops.

One day, a Native American named Squanto came to help them.

Squanto spoke English and taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn, catch fish, and find wild plants to eat.

He also helped them make peace with the local Native American tribe, the Wampanoag.

By the time fall came, the Pilgrims had a good harvest.

 They had plenty of corn, beans, and squash.

They were so grateful for their blessings that they decided to have a big feast to give thanks.

They invited Squanto and the Wampanoag tribe to join them.

 

The feast lasted for three days!

Everyone brought food to share. The Pilgrims and the Native Americans ate turkey, fish, cornbread, and pumpkin.

 

They played games, sang songs, and thanked God for their friendship and the food they had.

Even though the Pilgrims had faced many hardships, they chose to give thanks for the good things in their lives.

 

They were thankful for Squanto’s help, for their new friends, and for the food that would help them survive the next winter.

 

This feast became known as the First Thanksgiving, and it reminds us to always look for things to be thankful for, even when times are tough.

 

Just like the Pilgrims, we can “give thanks in all circumstances.”
