吉人天相 Heaven helps the worthy
When Pei Du(裴度) was a boy, he failed many times in the Imperial Examination.
A famous physiognomist(面相相士) in Luoyang(洛陽) said that he was not good-looking and would starve to death.
When
Pei Du heard about it, he didn't mind and remained calm-minded.
Once when he visited Xiangshan Temple, he saw
a woman worshiping Buddha and praying in the
temple, and then left in a hurry.
She left behind a
parcel.
Pei
Du picked it up, but he couldn't catch up.
He
waited there till the evening, but didn't see the
woman cam her lost.
Whe
is was too late in the evening, he took it home.
The
next morning, he went to the temple to wait
again.
He
saw the woman running towards him in a hurry.
While
looking for it, she cried and said that her old father was innocent and was tied up in prison.
He borrowed two jade belts from someone yesterday.
, a rhinoceros belt,
worth
more than a thousand coins, to be used to ask
someone to plead for my father's pardon.
Unfortunately,
it was lost here.
Her
father will never be able to escape from it.
After
saying this, she burst into tears like rain, and
he was so painful that he didn't want to live.
Pei
Du unwrapped the package and checked it.
It
was indeed the things as she said, so he returned them
all.
The
woman thanked her and wanted to leave one as a gift
to Pei Du.
Du
smiled and said, "If I covet this, why should I come here to wait for you today?"
The
woman bowed again and left.
Later,
when the fortune teller saw Pei Du again, he was
surprised and said,
"You must have a virtuous character, so
your expression is very different, and your future is
boundless."
Pei
Du was promoted to Jinshi(進士) in that year and became a
prominent official.
