Old monk Xuyun 18

 

During the Yunnan period, Old Monk often sat for seven or eight days.

Sometimes when people come to discuss important matters with him, they have to use a chime to call him, and then he can come out of concentration.

Therefore, when the old monk was in Yunju Mountain, we asked him:

 "Are these things happening?" He said: "Yes."

We then asked: "Old monk, why don't you enter concentration now?"

He said: " Now that the monastery is being rebuilt, government officials and other people come to see me every day.

I can’t do it without going out, so I can’t enter meditation.”

He also said with a smile: “If I sit here for seven or eight days without being able to afford it, some unfaithful people will come to me.

People with good intentions will take my shell and burn it when I die.

Then this temple will not be built, so now I dare not enter meditation."

Although the old monk did not sit in meditation for seven or eight days when he was in Yunju Mountain, he often sat still for the entire day.

Sometimes I start sitting at around 12 o'clock at night and don't get up until the evening of the next day.

Therefore, the realm of 0ld Man is not something ordinary ordinary people can know.

在雲南時期，老和尚經常一坐七、八天。有時候人家有要事找他商量，就得用引磬為他開靜，他才出定。

因此，老和尚在雲居山時，我們就問他：「是否有這些事情呢？」他說：「是呀。」

我們又問：「老和尚您現在為什麼不入定呢？」他說：「現在重建寺院，每天都有政府人員和其它人來找我，我不出去不行，所以不能入定呀。」

他還笑著說：「如果我在這裡一坐七、八天不起，一些不懷好意的人，當我死了，就把我的色殼子搬去燒掉。那麼這個寺院就蓋不成了，所以現在我不敢入定。」

雖然，老和尚在雲居山時，沒有坐禪入定七、八天之久，但他經常一坐就一整天不動。

有時從夜裡十二點左右開始坐，直到第二天傍晚才起坐。所以他老人家的境界，不是一般凡夫所能知道的。
