Old monk Xuyun 12 

In Yunju Mountain, the old monk not only often went to the hall to give lectures to the public, but also set an example and educated the public through practical actions in various details of life.

Now that we think about it, we feel extremely ashamed.

Therefore, every move, word and deed of a good teacher is an example for our descendants.

His old man's bones were broken in several places during the Cloud Gate Incident.

Between 1956 and 1958, he often fell ill and had fever.

When old wounds and fractures ached, he would lie in bed and groan.

But as soon as he heard that someone had come to see him, he immediately sat up again, crossed his legs, and was in great spirits.

He could talk for three or four hours, and there was no sign that he was sick at all.

We sometimes urge the guest to leave, wanting him to take a break. 

On the contrary, he was unhappy and scolded us, saying, "People come to me when they have something to do.

 I can't leave until they have finished talking about it."

But as soon as the guests left, he lay down and groaned again.

We asked him: "You were in such good spirits just now when people came.

Why is it so painful when people leave?"

He said: "This is karma! I, the King of Hell, can't control me.

I can get up if I want to, or if I can't Just won’t get up.” In fact, we were also surprised.

老和尚在雲居山，不但時常上堂為大眾師父講開示，更在種種生活細節中以實際行動來以身作則，教育大眾。現在我們回想起來，真是感到慚愧萬分。

所以說善知識的一舉一動、一言一行，都是我們後人的榜樣。他老人家在雲門事件中，骨頭被打斷了好幾處。

在五六至五八年間，經常生病發燒，身上的舊患、骨折的地方疼痛不已時，他便躺在床上呻吟。可是一聽說有人來見他，馬上又坐起來，盤起腿子，精神好得很，可以一談三、四個小時，一點也看不出他有病。我們有時催促客人走，想讓他休息一下。

他反而不高興，罵我們說：「人家有事才來找我，等人家把事情說完了才能走嘛。」可是客人一走，他又躺下來呻吟了。我們問他：「剛才人來了，你精神那麼好。人才走，為何又這麼痛苦呀？」

他說：「這是業障呀！閻王老子也管不了我，我要起來就起來，要不起來就不起來。」實際上我們也感到很驚奇。
