Later, he used the phrase

 "Sinking fish and falling wild

 goose" to describe the

"沉魚落雁" evolved

 birds are frightened and avoid

釋義：

魚、鳥不辨美醜，即使看見美女也同樣趕緊潛水高飛。語本《莊子．齊物論》。後用「沉魚落雁」形容女子容貌美麗出眾。

 

《莊子．齊物論》主旨在論述常人判別事物的準則不一樣，他則主張一切人與物存在的意義和價值都是等齊的。

莊周藉著王倪之口說：「毛嬙和麗姬是人們公認的美女，但是魚見到她們趕緊潛入水底，鳥見了她們立刻向高空飛去，麋和鹿見到她們則飛快跑走。」

因為魚、鳥、麋、鹿四種動物不辨美醜，即使見到美麗的女子也如同見到其他人般趕緊逃離，藉此傳達世間無絕對的是非美醜的觀念。

「沉魚落雁」就從這裡演變而出，但語意沿用魚、鳥因見毛嬙、麗姬等絕色美女而驚畏躲避，借此來讚美女子的容貌美麗出眾。

宋朝無名氏《錯立身》第二齣：「看了這婦人，有如三十三天天上女，七十二洞洞中仙，有沉魚落雁之容，閉月羞花之貌。」即以「沉魚落雁」形容女子容貌的美麗。

 

一個人如果心地不善良，縱使有沉魚落雁之貌，也不算是真正的美！
