【Plaza de Armas】

This central plaza features famous monuments,

the Governor's palace and is the point from which all distances to other parts of Chile are measured.

 

The name "Plaza de Armas" is quite common in Latin America,

 

because early colonial powers usually planned a square when building a city and surrounded the important buildings on the square.

 

When the enemy attacked, the square could be used as a place to gather troops,

 

so this name has become a "vegetable market name (common name)" that can be seen everywhere in Latin America.

 

There is also a Plaza de Armas in Santiago, Chile.

 

In 1540, the Spanish explorer Pedro de Valdivia led an expedition from Peru southward by land to the river valley where Santiago is currently located,

 

and in 1541 he established Santiago de la Nueva Extremadura(埃斯特雷馬杜拉自治區)here,

 

which became the current Santiago.

The Plaza de Armas was the most central main square in the city planning in 1541.

在拉丁美洲裡《武器廣場》Plaza de Armas這個名字還蠻常見的，因為早期的殖民勢力建城之初通常都會規劃一個廣場，將重要的建築環繞在廣場四周，在有敵人來襲時廣場可用來作為集結兵力的地方，所以這個名字也就成了拉丁美洲四處可見的一個「菜市場名」。智利的聖地牙哥也有這樣一座《武器廣場》Plaza de Armas。1540年時西班牙的探險家佩德羅·德·巴爾迪維亞Pedro de Valdivia帶領探險隊從祕魯走陸路南下抵達了目前聖地牙哥所在的這座河谷，並且於1541年在這裡設立了Santiago de la Nueva Extremadura成了當前的聖地牙哥，《武器廣場》這裡便是當時1541年的城市規劃裡最中央的主要廣場。

 

這一帶的老城區裡有很多歷史性的建築，包括了在廣場一側出名的《聖地牙哥大都會大教堂》Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago)。巴爾迪維亞建立聖地牙哥成為西班牙在智利的第一任皇家總督之後就在這個原來是原住民神廟的位置上建立了教堂，不過教堂歷經了多次的火災和重建，目前的版本是18世紀以後建的，教堂上醒目的兩座鐘塔更是在20世紀初期才加上去的。

 

 

武器廣場坐落於智利首都聖地亞哥市中心的繁華地帶，早在1541年聖地亞哥建城時，瓦爾迪維亞下令在城市中央修建武器廣場。如今，有著近半個世紀的悠久歷史的廣場是，是當地市民休閒娛樂的好地方，也是造訪者觀光遊覽的好去處。來到廣場上，廣場上游人如織，周圍遍布著西班牙殖民時期（1541-1810年）遺留下來的古老建築。東側和南側是各種商店，供遊人閒逛購物。而廣場的北側，從左到右依次是中央郵局、智利歷史博物館、市政廳。中央郵局始建初衷為聖地亞哥第一居所，即西班牙征服者瓦爾迪維亞的私人住所。
