  【 Plaza de Armas 】 This central plaza features famous monuments, the Governor's palace and is the point from which all distances to other parts of Chile are measured.   The name "Plaza de Armas" is quite common in Latin America ,   because early colonial powers usually planned a square when building a city and surrounded the important buildings on the square.   When the enemy attacked, the square could be used as a place to gather troops ,   so this name has become a " vegetable market name ( common name) " that can be seen everywhere in Latin America.   There is also a Plaza de Armas in Santiago , Chile.   In 1540, the Spanish explorer Pedro de Valdivia led an expedition from Peru southward by land to the river valley where Santiago is currently located,   and in 1541 he established Santiago de la Nueva Extremadura( 埃斯特雷馬杜拉自治區 ) here,   which became the current Santiago .
